How Can TMJ Disorder Cause Jaw and Neck Pain?

If a CBCT scan were performed, you would find that there are many different muscles, nerves, and ligaments found with the TMJ that make it possible for you to perform normal oral functions such as eating, speaking, and swallowing. When added pressure and tension form in these joints, it can lead to intense pain. This can be caused by an uneven bite, facial trauma, or even teeth grinding.

Once you begin to feel discomfort in the TMJs, it can radiate to other parts of your head and neck. Soon, you’ll discover that it’s difficult and even painful to move your neck, and while treating it with at-home remedies might offer temporary relief, it will come back if your TMJ is not thoroughly addressed.

This is where Dr. Brunner comes in, as he is board-certified and trained to treat the underlying causes of TMJD.

To experience relief from jaw and neck pain, there are a few steps you can follow:

  • Meet with Dr. Brunner to undergo a thorough examination. He will use the CBCT scanner to capture images of your jaw, head, and neck so a clearer image is seen and can be used for treatment planning. Alternatively, he may choose to use our joint vibration analysis (JVA) to diagnose the problem, as it will capture electronic recordings each time your jaw moves, helping him to better understand the internal state of the jaw joints.
  • Undergo necessary treatment, which can include an occlusal splint to shift your jaw forward as well as reduce teeth grinding and clenching.
  • Enjoy the results provided by your customized splint.
