Invisalign vs. Metal Braces

While metal braces are still used to address many of the most complex orthodontic issues, they require a bracket-and-wire system that is bonded to your teeth. Regular follow-up appointments and wire tightening causes teeth to shift until they reach the desired destination. Although highly effective, they present many pitfalls, including a more visible orthodontic solution, food restrictions, and additional discomfort.

Invisalign, on the other hand, is a worthy alternative that generates outstanding results. Not only does it incorporate clear, plastic aligners that are custom-made and virtually invisible, but they are flexible and can be taken out to eat and drink. These clear aligners feel more comfortable while being worn and apply gentle, continuous pressure to teeth to keep them moving.

One of the top questions we get is, “How can Elmbrook Family Dental of Wauwatosa offer more advanced Invisalign treatments at such an affordable price?” The answer is simple: Dr. Taibl has completed exclusive, advanced education with the American Academy of Clear Aligners, including a highly selective mentorship program. Thanks to his expertise and unique partnerships with Invisalign, he receives significant discounts on aligners—discounts that he passes directly on to you.

How Does Invisalign Work?

When you're ready to start your Invisalign treatment, we begin with a thorough data collection that includes a 3D scan, photos, and X-rays. This gives us the precise information we need to create a detailed, computer-generated simulation that shows exactly how your teeth will shift and how long it will take to achieve your desired results.

The average Invisalign treatment takes about 11 months. However, with Dr. Taibl's advanced training, proven techniques, and exclusive access to resources that 99% of other Invisalign providers don't have, we can often reduce that timeline to just 6 months!

Once you agree to your treatment plan, you'll return in just three weeks to receive your first set of trays. These custom aligners are worn 24/7—only remove them to eat or clean your teeth. In some cases, a small amount of polishing (called IPR) between your teeth may be needed to create just enough space for the trays to fit perfectly. Additionally, some patients may need tiny tooth-colored attachments to help move their teeth more efficiently.

After we’ve gotten you started, we’ll give you several sets of aligners to take home and begin at specific intervals. Your only job? Wear the trays consistently, and we’ll take care of the rest!

When your treatment is complete and you're thrilled with your new smile, we’ll provide you with upper and lower retainers. These look similar to your Invisalign trays but are a bit thicker. You’ll wear them every night to keep your teeth in their new, perfect positions. They also help protect your teeth from clenching or grinding and can even be used for professional whitening. It’s important to replace your retainers every 1-2 years, as wear and tear can cause them to lose their fit. If you ever need a new set, we’ll be happy to assist.

Benefits of Invisalign

Although Invisalign and metal braces have the same goal – to create straighter smiles – clear aligners offer far greater benefits that you can enjoy, such as:

  • Faster results in just 6 months (on average)
  • A more discreet look that uses clear, plastic trays
  • Customized trays that are designed for your smile
  • Optimal flexibility, as you’ll be required to remove your trays while eating and drinking
  • An easy-to-clean solution
  • Less irritation, as there are no protruding brackets and wires to rub against soft oral tissues

Is Invisalign Right for Me?

Generally, if you struggle with overcrowding, gapped teeth, or a misaligned bite, there is a good chance that you’ll be able to move forward with Invisalign treatment. However, our dentists will need to conduct a thorough consultation to determine the severity of your orthodontic issue. You must also be committed to the process, as it does require a level of personal responsibility since these trays can be removed.
