How Are Headaches and Migraines Connected to Your Jaw?
The mouth and body are closely connected, which means that when a problem occurs in one area, it’s likely to manifest in some way in the other. When thinking about how migraines and headaches are linked to your jaw, it’s best to consider how they’re positioned within the craniofacial region.
The TMJ (temporomandibular joints) are located on either side of the jaw at the base of the skull. The movement of opening and closing your mouth not only affects your mouth but also your head. When inflammation forms and creates tension or dysfunction in the nerves and muscles surrounding these joints, it can result in increased pain throughout the jaw and head.
Generally, most are considered tension headaches or migraines. However, when one occurs because of TMJ, you’re likely to feel facial and jaw tightness as well as pain throughout the face, minimal jaw movement, and even a clicking or popping sound when opening your mouth.
How Can We Help with Headaches & Migraines?
To remedy this problem, Dr. Brunner and his team will first need to identify the underlying cause of your TMJ disorder. This requires using advanced imaging systems such as our CBCT scanner and joint vibration analysis (JVA) to analyze the condition of the joint. This will help narrow down the reason for TMJ so that he can develop an accurate treatment plan.
Some of the most common methods used by Dr. Brunner may include:
- A customized occlusal splint to fix issues associated with teeth that do not come together properly as well as cases that involve teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism). These devices can help the jaw move into a more comfortable position throughout the night.
- The use of our MLS Cold laser to help reduce inflammation caused by arthritis or another similar condition.
- Additional exercises to improve musculoskeletal pain caused by poor posture.
